A little-known secret is I am currently house hunting in New Jersey. Not the time or space to discuss that, but one of my biggest fears is leaving the food scene of New York City. In between open houses in the craziest market since the early 2000s, we’re looking to do what we can to remove that fear of leaving the culinary capital of the world.
While many a spots around NJ have been tried and tasted, a recent quick lunch at The Committed Pig of Morristown had me giddy to write up on it! The menu featured an all-day breakfast, full burger menu, and *double-take* a Grilled Cheese menu. Immediately yes, I would be getting one of these. Feast your eyes on the Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese. Fontina, gruyere, white cheddar, spinach, and artichoke spread, served with fries (I obviously substituted for sweet potato fries).
So yummy and gooey, you can see the cheese oozing out in the most perfect way. The blend of Fontina, Gruyere, and white cheddar creates a flavor profile that is out of this world. The Fontina adding a subtle nuttiness that complements the creaminess of the other cheeses. The Gruyere bringing a touch of sweetness and a mild earthy flavor, while the white cheddar adds a sharpness that cuts through the richness of the spinach and artichoke spread. And speaking of the spread, it’s the unsuspecting perfect addition to this masterpiece of a sandwich, adding a tangy kick that ties everything together. Whether you’re a die-hard grilled cheese fan or just looking for a delicious and comforting meal, you simply have to try this spot!
Not to look over the sweet potato fries, they offer sweet potato waffle fries. Chic-fil-A had it right in differentiating with this shape among the fry world, and I just love to see it executed in the non-fast food world. Crunchy, sweet, and salty- just how I like them. I asked for a bit of extra BBQ sauce and went to town on this comfort cheesy and fried goodness.
PS if you can’t make it to New Jersey and would like to up your grilled cheese game, but are not looking to bring in a whole other dip, try putting some homemade cream cheese on the inside of both pieces of bread with your favorite cheese and see why this was one of the only offered sandwiches at the Mina’s Bakery storefront.
When one of us orders a heavy lunch, the other goes lighter, knowing we will share everything in the end anyways. The Beet Salad with roasted beets, baby spinach, mixed greens, goat cheese, candied pecans, and balsamic vinaigrette.
I opted to add shrimp to my salad- plump and cooked to perfection, their briny flavor paired well with the sweet and earthy beets. Not only delicious, this salad also packs a nutritional punch thanks to this star ingredient – beets. A great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and folate. They’re also known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Not to mention, they’re tasty, not sure where the negative stereotype comes from! The candied pecans provided a satisfying crunch, while the tangy goat cheese added a creamy richness to the dish. The balsamic vinaigrette brought all the flavors together with its sweet and tangy notes, making for a truly harmonious salad experience.
Aside from being delicious, this salad was also incredibly fresh and vibrant, with a beautiful presentation that was almost too pretty to eat! The purple, green, and oranges looked like Fall in a bowl. Of course, eat it I did. Honestly, just as yummy as the grilled cheese if you ask me.
While the drive from Morristown to NYC was too long of a commute in the end, I can’t wait to move at least somewhat closer so I can come back. Going through the entire Grilled Cheese menu is now on my bucket list but wow did this little downtown eatery impress all around. Until we’re back, wish us luck in the house and yummy-foods-in-NJ search.
