Please let me explain the title, as this is a family friendly blog.
Momofuku is a restaurant group owned by David Chang, famous Korean chef and TV personality. Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssäm Bar, Má Pêche, Milk Bar and Momofuku Ko are all located in NYC and are all highly acclaimed. I will probably do a review of Noodle Bar as it is deserving but today we focus on my favorite, Milk Bar!
“Offbeat baked goods” is used to describe the bakery that is home to some of the cities favorite desserts. Crack pie, cereal milk ice cream, Cornflake-chocolate-chip-marshmallow cookie, and the infamous birthday cake truffle balls are all must haves if making a trip but then again, I could list the entire menu as a must have. Pictured here are my absolute favorite, the birthday cake truffle balls.
This rating would be a solid 5/5 momofuku-ing stars!
SO SO SO good it really is hard to describe what separates these from any other truffles, cake balls, and cake pops you’ve ever had without trying them. Rainbow cake is mixed with vanilla infused milk and then coated with white chocolate and rolled in rainbow cake crumbs. That’s right, not only are you eating a bite of rainbow cake, you’re eating one that’s been coated with white chocolate goodness and rolled in more cake. The vanilla infused milk adds a light sweetness and moistness that gives these truffles the softest bite yet keeps them from being overly sweet. Each bite is like a little birthday party in your mouth!
Bonus: they use their cake balls to create a layered cake that is just as delicious as you might imagine. Additionally, I have heard they are now creating wedding cakes as well. So that’ll save some time searching for a cake on my big day….
It is difficult to make a stop at Milk Bar without grabbing a couple of other goodies along the way.
The crack pie (pictured below) and compost cookies were new to me during Mina’s last trip. Described as “toasted oat crust with a gooey butter filling,” I honestly am not sure what makes up the crack pie but I do understand why it has that name. One bite is not enough, that thing is addicting! Very smooth and delicate, the taste in interesting at first and leaves you wanting more and more. Again not too sweet, and while it is much more simple than some of the other offerings in ingredients, it has an intriguing taste making the next bite irresistible. I’d give this 4/5 stars in comparison to the truffles and note that my sugar levels are thankful it is sold by the slice and not whole pie. The compost cookie lives up to it’s name- a mixture of with pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, graham cracker, butterscotch and chocolate chips, it’s “everything but the kitchen sink.” I am a big fan of sweet and salty mixture so this cookie to me really strikes a cord. Not as noteworthy as their cake balls but a 3.8/5 stars taste is nothing to ignore (not quite as great as the pie). If you are not getting the cake balls, try the confetti cookie. If you are this or the before mentioned cornflake cookie are a great add-on to your order.
Super bonus: One of their NYC locations is the block below mine. #humblebrag
