It’s almost impossible to mess up a doughnut.
From Krispy Kreme to Dunkin to artisanal bakeries- you may have a preference but let’s be honest, you’d take one from any spot at almost any time. In need of a quick breakfast? Doughnut. Afternoon pick me up? Doughnut. Dessert post-dinner? Doughnut. Now thanks to friends at The Doughnut Project here in Manhattan you can even have the treat as a savory dish such as the Maple Bacon, the Olive Oil with Pepper, or the Everything Bagel Doughnuts. I can fairly say, lunch? Doughnut.
My all-time favorite spot has to be one of NYC’s favorite local chains- Dough. Made throughout the day, these doughnuts are always fresh. The dough itself uses a proprietary recipe and “brioche-like dough,” utilizing yeast, resulting in a doughnut so moist and fluffy and full, it’s almost as if you are eating a personal cake. It is no wonder they emphasize the dough in their name.
The best part? These are not your average glazed or chocolate with sprinkles doughnuts. (OK so they do have a glazed option but it is 100x better than any glazed doughnut you have ever had). Salted Chocolate Caramel is sure to take care of any sweet tooth craving. Nutella is, well, Nutella. Cheesecake, Dulce De Leche, Cafe Au Lait, it is impossible to go wrong. If you are the complete opposite of me and do not want chocolate 24/7, the Lemon Ginger, Passion Fruit and aesthetically pleasing bright pink Hibiscus are all nothing but delicious.
Pictured above: Hibiscus, Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Cocoa Nib, Cafe Au Lait, Toasted Coconut, and of course Mocha-Almond Crunch. Hibiscus is the most striking with its’ bright pink hue from the Mexican hibiscus it is filled with and topped on. Tangy and tantalizing come to mind when enjoying this doughnut, definitely something thats new and interesting for most. If you enjoy this one, try the Passion Fruit as well. The Glazed is a cake-like dough, vanilla, and hint of salt making it unlike your average basic glazed. While I recommend exploring with flavors, this is a solid doughnut to enjoy. Cinnamon Sugar is similar but even sweeter as it is rolled in Mexican cinnamon and sugar, making it as sweet as can be. Chocolate Cocoa Nib is a chocolate glazed doughnut topped with chocolate nibs for a crunch and perfectly chocolate flavor. Finally, Cafe Au Lait, with a roasted coffee glaze and crunchy pecan topping, reminding you more of a coffee cake than cup of Joe.
I think these doughnuts are perfect and there is little room for improvement. My personal favorite? Mocha- Almond Crunch. Chocolate, almonds, and the cake-like base itself make for the perfect breakfast, dessert for lunch or dinner or really just anytime pick me up. Toasted Coconut comes in at a very close second.
Luckily, the Chelsea location is on my way to work so writing this post has inspired a quick pit stop, see you shortly Dough!
PS I will never get it right- is it donut or doughnut?!
