Not fully prepared to write the disappointment of this one, but here comes the no dogs allowed discovery of Dog and Bone. A close by and seemingly pup friendly bar/restaurant, after a long morning hike with our puppy Bailey, it seemed like the perfect spot to stop for fueling up and to let the little one chill rest and relax.
Little did we know, while the namesake and paw prints implied dogs allowed inside, this is not the case. What a bummer! Being dog friendly is extremely common in NYC, so letting a pooch sit outside with you is not necessarily a big deal. Letting dogs inside to cool off and play with one another though, is unique and something I am sure other dog owners would agree with me, much needed!
I’ll end my venting there and move on to the food. Being at a bar, and that a rugby game was on (even though we could no longer watch as there are no TV’s outside), typical pub fare was the only route we could go. Pictured above is the The “OG” Pat LaFrieda Original Blend Burger, sub fries for brussel sprouts. Topped w/ Wisconsin Cheddar Nueske bacon, lettuce, and tomato and onion, the perfect toppings for an old-fashioned burger. We did sub out the bacon, being we try to stay away from pork products, but I hear it’s quite good. The burger was really great! Alongside a Guinness to support the Irish rugby team, it hit the spot. Only grievance- the cheese was not melted enough. You may see it in the picture but if I were to have an ideal pub burger, the cheese hugs the burger underneath from heat. Not worth not getting again though. The brussel sprouts on the other hand were a letdown. Overly fried that they were not only crispy, but nearly burnt. While not completely inedible, I would rate these some of my least favorite.
Ordered alongside were the sausage roll and BBQ chicken wings. Sausage rolls have become a go to order when seen on a menu. My partner is Irish and there are few foods the Irish pride themselves on like a good ole’ sausage roll. Originating in 19th century France, it’s become a staple in British snack food and street fare. This roll may have been OK in taste, but it would be hard for me to recall anything past the fact that the sausage inside the puff pastry was actually still cold! What a disappointment, enjoying a beer, peering into an Ireland rugby match, stuck outside with a cold roll. The pastry on the outside was room temperature which should have been my giveaway but biting into it still left me surprised. My favorite? Swift in NoHo serves up one of the flakiest and most delicious sausage rolls in NYC.
You’ll note, these don’t look like BBQ wings, which is because of course there was a mix up and buffalo chicken wings arrived. I am not one to send something back but at this stage, come on! Cold cheese, cold roll, bad burnet sprouts, let’s get the sauces right? The waiter noted the mix up and came back a few minutes later with the correct order. I’ll say that is extremely appreciated, especially after insisting it was fine and we would move on. The wings were what one would expect from a bar, overly fried and overly dressed. I prefer a wing that is a thin layer of crisp and brushed over with whatever sauce is the flavoring. Dripping with sauce all over the plate just leads to a mess and nearly no hint of chicken. I know many want a bottle of sauce per wing. If that’s your style, you’re in the right place. Otherwise, pass on the wings. The service and care of the staff is certainly a plus at Dog and Bone, perhaps the reason I would return, only for some drinks.
Always looking to end on a positive note, introducing the forementioned Bailey! The sweetest, good girl you ever did see.
