It may or may not be obvious by the dessert to non-dessert ratio of posts, but I am a sugar fiend.
If I could have dessert over a main course, I almost always will. From growing up with the world’s best baker to living in NYC with the world renowned chefs and pastries on every corner, I have tried it all. But, one dessert stands out slightly above all the rest. The chocolate pecan pie at True Confections in Vancouver, Canada took my number one spot about 10 years ago and nothing has been able to top it just yet. Considering the month of November has snuck up on us, meaning Thanksgiving and pies are so close, I figured it’s the perfect day to debut this beauty.
The picture above was taken on my most recent trip with the little brother (pre-filtering so excuse the quality). Since I had this many years ago I knew we each needed two slices each because one is almost never enough. In an eight day trip, we visited True Confections 5 times because of course Alan loved it just as much as Mina and I in our visits years prior.
True Confections is Vancouver’s first “desserts-only restaurant.” a trend I can get behind. On a mission to create homemade desserts from fresh ingredients, two friends tried and tested multiple childhood recipes until a menu was created deserving of its own restaurant.
The pie crust is thin but crisp and flaky, perfectly portioned to let the flavors of the filling dominate each bite. The filling is extremely rich, filled with a buttery concoction of chocolate and pecans, it is sweet but has the savories of the nuts to balance out. I suggest warming the pie just slightly and adding some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream like we did. The chocolate and pecans are not only warm but become gooey and the perfect texture juxtapose with the crisp crust, and same goes with the hot and cold combination with the ice cream. This pie slice is absolutely delicious, completely satisfying, divine, yummy, flavorful, and every other similar adjective. Perfect rating.
Please note, they do have a pecan pie which this is not a review of. Their ratings on other offerings are fairly lower considering the wait and hype around the downtown Vancouver location. I will admit their cakes do look lackluster but I have only gotten the chocolate pecan pie, to go, and have nothing but a 5 star rating to give!
Like their motto states, “Life is better when you eat dessert first!”
