I was a little hard on Canada when reviewing the food in Montreal from our summer trip
So I figure it is time to showcase the one dessert that no Canadian city can mess up: their legendary Beaver tail!
Fried dough is stretched to resemble the shape of a beaver tail, hence the name, and then topped with your choice of sweet confections. Beavertails are sweet… very sweet, probably overly sweet. I’m not one to say that often but there is no balance of sugar or flavors in this dessert, but then again this is not the most sophisticated dessert.
They are however, always made up of ingredients you can’t help but love! Pictured above is the Avalanche and the Coco Vanil available at all of the chain Beavertail’s Pastry restaurant locations.
The Avalanche (left) consists of their base used as a glue to hold the ingredients and topped with crumbled Skor candies and a caramel sauce.
The Coco- Vanil’ is made with the same base, Oreo cookies, and drizzled in a sweet chocolate sauce.
Again, nothing too crazy in these. Fried pastry dough, a creamy icing, and then your favorite childhood cookies and candies crumbled on top with a sweet sauce? WHY NOT?! The Avalanche is my preferred of the two since it has a crunch with the creamy sauces and fluffed dough. Eating these is like taking a trip straight back to the carnival or fair. Spoiler alert: those foods are just as great as an adult. As an adult however, you will notice just how incredibly cavity inducing they are.
Other flavors include Nutella and Banana, Maple Butter (of course) and Garlic Butter and Cheese (I’m intrigued). My all time favorite is the “Triple Trip” featuring chocolate hazelnut spread, peanut butter and Reese’s Pieces- peanut butter and chocolate is the ultimate recipe for success. Add fried dough and a chocolate sauce on top and you have won over my heart. This is a staple that I have now tried in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto/Niagara Falls and I would recommend over and over again for that sweet tooth craving.
So next time you are in Canada, be sure to check out one of the iconic Beavertail chains. Fun story: In 2009 during President Obama’s visit to the Canadian embassy in Ottawa, beavertail was served. On his way to the airport, the President made a stop at a local market specifically to buy Beavertail (one named Obama Tail in his honor), so I’m guessing he enjoyed it just as much!
